13th Cosentino Design Challenge Calls for Entries

Posted on 29 October 2018 by cradmin

Cosentino has officially launched the 13th edition of the Cosentino Design Challenge (CDC). The competition is open to students enrolled in the 2018-2019 academic year at any educational center or polytechnic offering courses in design, architecture, interior architecture or other similar fields of study. The international competition offers students a chance to participate in a global professional competition.

Composed of two categories, the 13th edition of Cosentino Design Challenge ’s architecture brief asks students to reflect on “Cosentino and Water”. The design brief is focused on “Cosentino and Energy”. In both categories, students have complete freedom in conceptualizing their sustainable and innovative projects. The final project must include one or more products manufactured by Cosentino: Silestone natural quartz surface, Dekton ultracompact surface, and Sensa protected natural stone.

Each concept must boast technical qualities, with a creative emphasis placed on the theme set for each category. The jury will take into consideration the following criteria:

  • Conceptual and technical quality of the project
  • Analytical study, thought process and research of the subject
  • Research on the spatial experience of the surroundings
  • Creativity of the design
  • Innovativeness of the design
  • Environmental respect of the design
  • Adaptation of the project idea to the expressive capacity of Cosentino brand materials and products
  • New ideas for materials, finishes, applications, etc.
  • Feasibility for the development and construction of the projects presented
  • Adaptation of the chosen medium for the presentation with regards to graphics, expressiveness and the kind of idea presented
  • Presentational quality of the design

Throughout the competition, students are encouraged to visit Cosentino Showrooms to discover the company’s wide range of products.

For each category, the following prizes will be awarded: one first prize, one second prize, one third prize, and special mentions. First three winners will be awarded the equivalent of €1,000 each in the currency of the country where a student is awarded. Winners will also receive special mentions and global recognition.

The competition encourages student research on different conceptual approaches. This includes the layout of spaces, materials and the constructive systems that define them, via experimentation with Cosentino products.

The project submission period closes on June 1, 2019. The judging panel will announce the winning projects and their designers in late June. All projects must be submitted in digital format via the competition website. http://cosentinodesignchallenge.org.

Video: Fitting a Tight Alcove Countertop

Posted on 25 October 2018 by cradmin

This 20 minute video, made by Freebird Interiors, a specialist in fitted alcove cabinets, chunky floating shelves, wardrobes and display shelving units out of Sheffield, UK, was originally made to show installers how to fit a countertop into an alcove, but the company was kind enough to share it publicly.

It shows the company’s full process of marking/scribing, cutting to shape, checking and fitting an alcove cupboard countertop on an actual installation for one of it’s customers. While the material used is laminate, this process could likely be used for other materials, such as solid surface, that can be easily cut on the job site.

Weha Introduces the Pitbull Diamond Resin Cupwheel

Posted on 22 October 2018 by cradmin

Weha has introduced the new Pitbull Diamond Resin Cupwheel. This product is a hybrid resin polishing pad with a harder bond to perform like a resin filled diamond cup wheel. However, the Pitbull Resin Cupwheel will reportedly grind and shape with zero chipping on the material.

The Pitbull resin cupwheel comes on a light weight rigid aluminum back. The resin diamond looks like a traditional polishing pad. But the bond is more durable and longer lasting.

The Weha Pitbull Resin Cup wheel can run wet or dry on all materials including granite, marble, quartz, engineered stone, porcelain, ceramic, cultured, concrete and other stone with zero chipping.

This Resin Cupwheel can remove fiber mesh off the back of stone as fast as any diamond cupwheel can. It will create a bevel, round over, or larger radius very quickly. It is also suitable for smoothing out the underside of counter top overhangs and for breaking the polish and creating a hone from a polished surface. It is available in 30, 50, 100 and 200 grit.

Health & Safety Watch: OSHA Seeks Input on Silica Control Measures

Posted on 18 October 2018 by cradmin

OSHA has announced that the administration is seeking input on the revised silica rule for the construction industry that went into effect last year. Specifically, OSHA wants information on the effectiveness of silica control measures that are not included in Table 1: Specified Exposure Control Methods When Working With Materials Containing Crystalline Silica.

Table 1 lists the dust control methods that have been found to be most effective by the specific tool being used or task being performed. When the table is followed correctly, with the additional use of respirators as noted, employers are not required to measure the silica exposure levels of their workers, and they are exempt from the permissible exposure limit (PEL).

In addition to new silica control measures, OSHA also wants information on new tools or tasks that can expose workers to silica along with the effectiveness of dust control methods to limit exposure during those tasks or with those tools.

After OSHA has gathered information, it will be evaluated for the purpose of determining whether revisions should be made to Table 1.

According to a report from Bloomberg, six months after enforcement of the new silica rule began, 116 violations had been issued. Thirty-five of these violations had to do with not measuring exposure levels while 31 violations dealt with not following the information in Table 1. Eighty percent of these violations are classified as serious and carry fines of up to $12,934.

Enforcement of the rule is steadily increasing, but so are complaints from employers about the agency lacking proper guidance on the new rule. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has already submitted lists of compliance questions in order to help the agency with guidance.

“OSHA is looking at this and I hope we’ll have something fairly soon,” stated Robert Matuga, safety director of the NAHB.

Interested parties who would like to submit information pertaining to revisions in Table 1, are encouraged to contact the following office:
