Natural Stone Institute Completes 38th Home with Gary Sinise Foundation

Posted on 05 October 2021 by cradmin4

The Natural Stone Institute has provided natural stone and fabrication services for its 38th home with the Gary Sinise Foundation through its R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) program. The R.I.S.E. program builds 100 percent mortgage-free specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders.

The fabrication and natural stone for U.S. Navy Petty Officer Second Class Doc Jacobs and his family were provided by Pacific Shore Stones and Marjan Stone. Jacobs enlisted in the summer of 2004 and after training was assigned to a unit in Ramadi Iraq. On February 25, 2006 Jacobs was severely injured in an IED explosion. His Humvee was struck by a triple stack IED, which took two lives, left two soldiers as amputees, and resulted in other serious injuries.

Jacobs was medevacked through Balad Surgical and soon transferred to National Naval Medical Center Bethesda via Landstuhl. After three months in Bethesda receiving critical surgeries, he began outpatient recovery and transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego. Jacobs was determined to continue his service. He fought to achieve his goal, becoming the Navy’s first amputee Corpsman and of all Navy Personnel to return to a deployable infantry unit. However, after several jaw surgeries left metal in Jacobs’ face and mouth, he was deemed undeployable by the Navy. Soon after, he chose to retire from the Navy to pursue dreams and goals in other areas of life.

Natural Stone Institute Completes 26th Home with Gary Sinise Foundation

Posted on 19 February 2020 by cradmin

The Natural Stone Institute, along with the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment), have provided natural stone and fabrication services for a veteran’s home in Virginia. The R.I.S.E. program builds specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders. To date, Natural Stone Institute members have been involved in 26 completed homes.

Natural stone and fabrication services for Retired Army Major Jeremy Haynes were provided by MARVA, Virginia Marble & Granite, Washington Marble & Granite, and BMJ Stone.

Growing up in Albany, Georgia, Jeremy Haynes watched the horrific events of September 11, 2001 unfold from his Marine Corps JROTC class. That day, he vowed to serve his country. Jeremy went on to earn a scholarship to Georgia Military College and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He deployed to Afghanistan, leaving at home his two children and then-pregnant wife, Chelsea. On a mission in Kabul on August 5, 2014, an Afghan Military Soldier shot Jeremy four times, including once in his back. The shot to his spine severed Jeremy’s vena cava and 80 percent of the nerves to his lower extremities, paralyzing both legs. He has faced a long and painful recovery. One day, Jeremy wrote “I WILL WALK AGAIN” on a sheet of paper. He stared at that paper for hours and every day after. Now, through Chelsea’s inspiration to heal, Jeremy can stand and walk for short periods with adaptive equipment. This specially adapted smart home will allow Jeremy to continue to progress in reclaiming his independence.

Natural Stone Institute Completes 25th Home with Gary Sinise Foundation

Posted on 26 December 2019 by cradmin

The Natural Stone Institute, in collaboration with the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment), has recently provided natural stone and fabrication services for two more homes. The R.I.S.E. program builds specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders. To date, Natural Stone Institute members have been involved in 25 completed homes.

Natural stone and fabrication services for US Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Jesse Cottle and his family in Idaho were provided by Arizona Tile, Daltile, Salado, and Valley View Granite.

Jesse Cottle joined the US Marine Corps in 2003. On July 19, 2009, during his fourth deployment, Jesse and his Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were on foot patrol clearing improvised explosive devises in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. An IED detonated under Jesse, blasting him into the air. After being sent to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Jesse underwent seven surgeries on both legs. He was then sent to Naval Medical Center San Diego for outpatient care, where he met Kelly, the woman who would soon be his wife. The couple has two young daughters: Grace and Isla.

Natural stone and fabrication services for US Army Sergeant Stefan LeRoy and his family in Florida were provided by Real Stone & Granite Corporation.

Stefan LeRoy enlisted in the Army in 2010. On June 7, 2012, while deployed in Afghanistan, two IEDs detonated and Stefan rushed to aid those injured by the blasts. While carrying an injured soldier to a Medevac helicopter, Stefan was struck by a third explosion. He lost both of his legs immediately. Stefan was transported to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he spent over a month in the hospital. He spent two years learning to adapt to his prosthetics, drawing strength from his friends and other amputees at the hospital. Sixteen months after his last surgery in September 2014, he ran the Boston Marathon.

Since 2016, 59 Natural Stone Institute members have donated their time, products and services to this cause. A list of all donors can be found at www.naturalstoneinstitute.org/RISE.
