Rugo Stone Receives 2020 Grande Pinnacle Award

Posted on 17 June 2021 by cradmin4

Rugo Stone in Lorton, Virginia has been named the recipient of the 2020 Grande Pinnacle Award for their work on the Trinity Church Wall Street Altar & Chancel Restoration project in New York City.

Trinity Church is a 174 year old historical structure that served as a shelter from debris during 9/11. The church needed a variety of upgrades, including complete conservation and restoration of the Gothic Revival chancel and the historic Astor memorial altar.

Rugo Stone was selected to dismantle and conserve the Astor memorial altar based on extensive experience in stone and mosaic conservation and restoration. Their task was to carefully dismantle the marble and the mosaic which formed the altar. The mosaic panels, believed to have been created in the 1870s by acclaimed Italian mosaic artist Antonio Salviati, are considered priceless, as is the Vermont statuary marble altar.

Rugo Stone cataloged the altar by 3D scanning it in place, and then dismantled and transported it to their carving studio. Over the next 6 months, artisans cleaned and restored the damaged pieces, as well as produced new columns, hand-carved capitals, performed dutchman patches, and new gilding, all to create a new configuration for an ADA accessible altar mounted to a new steel frame.

The team also sourced new Caen French limestone to recreate rear wall missing pilasters and base, which was particularly challenging as the original Caen limestone was quarried in the 1860s. The chancel floor was completely re-done using Olympian White Danby and Rosso Levanto marble pavers with 1/32-in. joints, patterned to create a bold checkerboard appearance. Rugo Stone’s team worked tirelessly to complete all the work for the dedication services that were scheduled for Christmas 2019.

Congratulations to all of the 2020 Pinnacle Award recipients.

Natural Stone Institute Announces Award Winners

Posted on 13 February 2019 by cradmin

Peter de Kok (GranQuartz) is the recipient of the 2018 Migliore Award for Lifetime Achievement. As one of the Marble Institute of America’s earliest members and a long-time member of the Building Stone Institute, it is highly symbolic that de Kok becomes the first recipient of this award since the merger of the two associations.

When asked why it has been so important to give back to the industry, de Kok replied: “The industry was very good to me, so it seems reasonable to me to try and support the associations in any way possible to help them and the industry grow. To be honored by my peers in this way gives me tremendous pleasure. I am proud to have played a small part in the industry.”

Tony Malisani (Malisani, Inc.) has been named the Natural Stone Institute’s 2018 Person of the Year. The Person of the Year Award is presented annual to an individual who has provided extensive support to the association’s executive team during the year. Malisani is a true stone industry ambassador. He has been a champion for the industry, serving on delegations to Marmomac and the Xiamen Stone Fair, speaking at Coverings and StonExpo, and participating in countless membership outreach meetings and education seminars. Malisani has offered innovative changes to the association’s Stone Industry Education Series, and has worked tirelessly to advance education for fabricators with an emphasis on building business skills.  In 2019 he will lead three stone summits through the Stone Industry Education Series, champion an effort to update the Dimension Stone Design Manual, and serve as a volunteer on two trade delegations.

Joey Marcella (Mario & Son) has been named 2018 Natural Stone Craftsman of the Year by the Natural Stone Institute. Marcella has shared his knowledge and been a leader within the industry through years of his participation in workshops, lectures, and fabricator roundtables. Looking forward, Marcella plans to immerse himself into the international art scene, and has even been invited to intern at the renowned Massimo Galleni Studio in Pietrasanta, Italy, where he and his wife hope to establish a part-time residence.

The winners of the 2018 Pinnacle Awards were announced during the Natural Stone Institute Awards Ceremony at TISE 2019 in Las Vegas, NV. Fourteen projects were honored with Awards of Excellence, and the best overall project was selected for the Grande Pinnacle Award.

Mario & Son (Liberty Lake, Wash.) was awarded the 2018 Grande Pinnacle Award for their work on Aura. The judges commented: “Never before in my forty years in this industry have I seen anything as creative. Non-traditional choice—we have never chosen a piece of art for this award. This is the type of project that makes one ask: ‘that was done in stone?’”

Ardmore Residence

Ardmore Residence

Ardmore Residence, M&G Contracts, Singapore
Like an artful masterpiece, Ardmore Residence exhilarates, engages and inspires. Rising boldly above Singapore’s premier residential address, Ardmore Park, the 36-story residential tower redefines the luxury living of an urban home with imagination, privileges and services that are exclusive to its residents. The apartment’s spaces conjure up the harmony of a light-filled urban cocoon rising above the energy of the city. Orchard Road’s landmarks dazzle in crisp clarity from the apartments facing south, while the units with a north orientation enjoy Bukit Timah Hill’s lush green foliage. The living and dining wing opens to a double-volume balcony that presents an impressive space for residents who enjoy entertaining at home in style, or simply relaxing in their luxury of space. At more than 2,000 sq. ft. each, all of the 56 luxurious units have been fitted with premium stone finishes, carefully selected and processed to achieve the optimal aesthetical effect. M&G inspected and selected the blocks directly from quarries located in Iran, Italy and Spain, and then fabricated according to the customized finishes of each unit type. The flat cut pieces and solid curved pieces for each unit were then laid out per the shop drawings, inspected and approved by the owner’s representatives, before individually numbered and packed for delivery to site.

Stockholm Residence

Stockholm Residence

Stockholm Residence, StenCentrum, Molndal, Sweden
This project began four years ago in a meeting with architects. The meeting concluded with one goal; white statuario marble, very characteristic, big tiles and book matched. The pursuit for good material started immediately. Most blocks did not fulfill the requests, but finally, one was found. It was a very sound block with the right dimensions and heavily veined. Realizing that it would be much more difficult to achieve the look with this strong veining, the project forged ahead. Before presenting the material to the client, the opportunities were discussed with the architects. Sketches were made of the best use of the material. The architects were very open-minded, realizing the difficulties of the project, but also very demanding regarding design and details. StenCentrum staff went to Stockholm to measure the two bathrooms in question. After making drawings of the rooms, slabs were compared to the drawings spread all over the workshop. Realizing dimensions from the architect’s drawings could not be followed new sizes were created to follow the book matched pattern. Frames to doors, windows and shelves were carefully cut to book match the wall pieces.

Congratulations to all the winners.

Judges for the 2013 Pinnacle Awards competition were:
• Kent Duffy FAIA, SRG Partnership in Portland, Ore.
• Steve Poland, Ankrom Moisan Architects in Portland, Ore.
• Christian Pongratz, Pongratz Perbellini Architects in Verona, Italy.
• Michael Twiss, immediate MIA past president, Columbia Stone, Inc. in Tualatin, Ore.
