Carol Ross Barney Receives 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award

Posted on 05 October 2017 by cradmin

AIA Chicago’s Board of Directors has selected Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, to receive the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award. From her earliest projects to her most contemporary work as the founder of her namesake firm, Ross Barney has been elevating architecture in the public realm for more than 40 years. She will receive the award on October 13 at Designight 2017, the premier awards night celebrating Chicago’s architectural community and the 2017 recipients of the Design Excellence Awards.

Ross Barney has been in the vanguard of civic space design since founding her firm, Ross Barney Architects in 1981. Barney has made significant contributions to the built environment, the profession, and architectural education. As an architect, urbanist, mentor, and educator, she has relentlessly advocated that excellent design is a right, not a privilege. Her body of work occupies a unique place within the panorama of contemporary architecture, being exclusively composed of work in the public realm.

Ross Barney’s projects vary in type and scale, but uphold a deep commitment to the role architecture plays in life quality; from transit stations that enrich the metropolitan experience; to buildings that are environmental stewards, showcasing sustainability in an overtly compelling way; to spaces that inspire young children and the brightest minds of tomorrow to learn, invent, and break boundaries.

Ross Barney’s work has been honored with more than 100 design awards, including four national AIA Institute Honor Awards, more than 40 AIA Chicago Awards, two AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Project Awards, the AIA’s Thomas Jefferson award for Public Architecture and the AIA Illinois Gold Medal.

For nearly two decades, the Ross Barney studio has been working along Chicago’s rivers. These efforts include the design of the Chicago Riverwalk and studies on all 150 of riverfronts across the city. Other Notable projects include the Bloomingdale / 606 Trail Master Plan, CTA Cermak-McCormick Place and Morgan Street Stations, Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation, James I Swenson Civil Engineering Building, Oklahoma City Federal Building and design of schools for Chicago and communities across the country.

ISFA to Offer CEUs through American Institute of Architects

Posted on 13 December 2013 by cradmin

The International Surface Fabricators Association (ISFA) has been approved to provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to architects through an agreement with the American Institute of Architects (AIA). ISFA’s first presentation, “Solid Surface Design Basics” has already been approved as a course, providing one Learning Unit (LU) for participants. Additional courses on quartz surfacing, advanced solid surface design, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, and more are already under development for 2014. The new ISFA program has three current sponsors, Dixie Plywood and Lumber Company, Meganite and Aetna Plywood, and additional sponsors are welcome.

As an Approved Provider for the AIA, the Continuing Education Program at ISFA will be developing content for a variety of approved courses through a program with participating ISFA members. ISFA is responsible for the coordination of the CEU efforts, and provides the point-of-contact for the AIA and other professional organizations that conduct continuing education programs. The ongoing administration of the CEU programs will be the responsibility of ISFA, with guidance from Continuing Education Program participants. ISFA will also train and register presenters who will be qualified to deliver approved courses on behalf of ISFA.

“This program will help participating ISFA member companies to have more contact with architects and designers and also help to education potential customers on a variety of topics,” said ISFA Executive Director Chuck Sawyer. “We think this will be of great value to our members to increase their reach and influence with more specifiers.”
