Chinese Crushed Glass Competes With Quartz

Chinese Crushed Glass Competes With Quartz

Posted on 26 February 2019 by CRadmin2

Now that countervailing and antidumping duties have taken effect on quartz countertops imported from China, some Chinese companies are already taking steps to circumvent the new regulations by offering crushed glass slabs. This can be seen either as a way to flood the market with a similar material that does not fall under the scope of the quartz duties or as a boon to efforts of using recycled materials. Either way, it is helpful to understand the pros and cons of crushed glass countertops before buying in to the material and offering it to your customers.

What Is a Crushed Glass Countertop?

Crushed glass is nothing new. It is produced domestically as a recycled-material option for those who wish to go green or rack up LEED points. Some of the branded options include Vetrazzo, IceStone and Curava.

While some crushed glass countertops have the glass embedded in concrete, acrylic resin is also used, and the resin countertops are those that are now directly competing with quartz. Home and business owners often choose crushed glass for its unique beauty, and some like the peace of mind that comes with owning and using a green surface.

Both types of crushed glass countertops are extremely durable, and some are even harder than quartz. They do not chip easily and are simple to clean. Acrylic resin is non-porous, so no sealer is required. However, with crushed glass embedded in concrete, regular sealing is necessary.

So far, the highest hurdle crushed glass has had to leap is the price point. Consumers pay from $50 to $100 per sq. ft., but that may drop now that China is looking much more strongly at this material to make up for lost quartz exports.

Crushed glass slabs are very strong, but if you put too much weight on one corner, they could crack. In addition, the material may stain from highly acidic foods, such as tomatoes, or from harsh cleansers that are not adequately washed away.

Availability of Crushed Glass

Crushed glass countertops are becoming increasingly available, and they are now produced to match quartz patterns and characteristics. One Chinese company, PowerStone Quartz, claims that they can produce slabs of any color that look exactly like quartz. These imported slabs are said to be distributed by MSI, but that has yet to be verified at the time of this publication.

According to PowerStone Quartz, their crushed glass options are only subject to an 18 percent tax/duty/tariff rather than the duties of up to 300 percent on quartz. Of course, domestic products are also available, such as the three mentioned above, but prices will be higher than Chinese imports.

If you have any experiences with crushed glass countertops, domestic or foreign, we would like to hear about your experiences. You can comment on this blog post on the website, or send us an email at [email protected]. We may publish your stories in a future update.

Coverings Unveils 2019 Show Experiences & 30th Anniversary Activations

Posted on 25 February 2019 by cradmin

Coverings (coverings.com), the largest international tile & stone show in North America, will feature a wide range of interactive onsite experiences, including expanded favorites like the Installation & Design Experience and new activations in celebration of its 30th Anniversary.

Celebrating three decades of success, the show will feature a range of commemorative displays showcasing the history of Coverings, with interactive opportunities for attendees to create and share their own memories. The South Lobby of the Orange County Convention Center will host a timeline with highlights from Coverings’ heritage and a 30th Anniversary-branded photo booth, where attendees can win anniversary t-shirts by sharing photos to social media. Exhibitors who have participated for 30 years will also be recognized. A DJ in the lobby reception area will incorporate music from 1989 as nod to Coverings’ launch year.

“Coverings’ 30th Anniversary is a testament to the success and growth of the tile and stone industry, which continues to dedicate time and resources to annually spotlight the best in product innovations, installation techniques, and industry expertise,” said Jennifer Hoff, president of Taffy Event Strategies, the management company for Coverings. “We look forward to celebrating three decades of success and those who continue to make the show possible.”

The Installation & Design Experience will expand its presence in 2019 with live, interactive showcases of the best tile installation techniques. Qualified, trained, and certified tile installers, will host demonstrations and conversations within the space, offering insights on common installation challenges and the use of trending materials. The Installation & Design Experience also will host daily happy hours for further networking and learning opportunities. For 2019, three vignettes will anchor the experience, designed by locally-based designers and architects:

New this year, Coverings will introduce an Online Planner to help attendees maximize their time at the show by previewing key exhibitor introductions through the New Product Showcase, which will launch in February. Guests will be able to explore innovative tools and products debuting at Coverings in advance and plan their visit by marking must-see exhibits within the Coverings mobile app to create a roadmap for their Coverings 2019 discoveries.

To further enhance the Coverings 2019 onsite experiences, many of the long-standing networking and learning opportunities will return:

  • Recharge at the Coverings Connect lounge, located on the show floor, which will feature a mobile device charging station, free WiFi, and “byte size” sessions, with short, digitally-focused educational seminars.
  • Peruse the Art Tile Courtyard for creative tile applications, with handcrafted tile and tiled dog houses, provided by Tile Council of North America members.
  • Learn from leading professional contractors at the Live Installation Demo Stage, for “how-to” classes with an in-person look at tile installation solutions for challenging projects.
  • Stop by The Stone Zone, where The Stone Fabricators Alliance will present ongoing demonstrations and educational “how-to” topics for fabricators and installers.

Video: Granite Slab Pre-Fabrication Inspection

Posted on 22 February 2019 by CRadmin2

The first step to fabricating granite is to complete a thorough inspection of the slab to detect any fissures or cracks. This can prevent unnecessary waste and delays. There is nothing more disheartening than having to call a customer to reschedule installation at a later date.

The following video is the first in a series presented by Fox Granite Countertops in New Braunfels, Texas. Even if you are already inspecting your slabs, it is often advantageous to get a look at how others are performing the work. If you believe this video is helpful, we may publish the other five videos in the series in the coming months. Let us know what you think at [email protected].

Health & Safety Watch: OSHA Launches CO Exposure Campaign

Posted on 21 February 2019 by CRadmin2

Because we are in the winter months and a lot of work is being performed indoors, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is urging employers to take all the necessary precautions to protect workers from carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions.

According to OSHA, workers die from CO exposure every year, usually while using fuel-burning equipment, tools or machinery in areas without adequate ventilation. Such equipment includes compressors, pumps, forklifts and delivery vehicles.

In order to combat CO poisoning, OSHA has introduced several useful online resources, including videos in English and Spanish, QuickCards in English and Spanish, a Portable Generator Safety Fact Sheet and a Carbon Monoxide Fact Sheet.

Following are among the highlights of the CO Fact Sheet:

  • CO is a deadly gas that has no color, odor or taste.
  • CO is a common industrial hazard that results from the burning of fuels such as natural gas, oil, propane, coal, wood and other materials.
  • The most common source of CO is internal combustion engines.
  • CO displaces oxygen in the blood, depriving the heart, brain and other vital organs.
  • Initial symptoms of poisoning include headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness and drowsiness.
  • CO poisoning can be reversed but only if caught in time. Permanent damage may still be caused.

To learn how to protect your workers from CO poisoning, please read the Fact Sheet linked above, and call your state OSHA or safety authority with any questions.

Natural Stone Institute Announces Award Winners

Posted on 13 February 2019 by cradmin

Peter de Kok (GranQuartz) is the recipient of the 2018 Migliore Award for Lifetime Achievement. As one of the Marble Institute of America’s earliest members and a long-time member of the Building Stone Institute, it is highly symbolic that de Kok becomes the first recipient of this award since the merger of the two associations.

When asked why it has been so important to give back to the industry, de Kok replied: “The industry was very good to me, so it seems reasonable to me to try and support the associations in any way possible to help them and the industry grow. To be honored by my peers in this way gives me tremendous pleasure. I am proud to have played a small part in the industry.”

Tony Malisani (Malisani, Inc.) has been named the Natural Stone Institute’s 2018 Person of the Year. The Person of the Year Award is presented annual to an individual who has provided extensive support to the association’s executive team during the year. Malisani is a true stone industry ambassador. He has been a champion for the industry, serving on delegations to Marmomac and the Xiamen Stone Fair, speaking at Coverings and StonExpo, and participating in countless membership outreach meetings and education seminars. Malisani has offered innovative changes to the association’s Stone Industry Education Series, and has worked tirelessly to advance education for fabricators with an emphasis on building business skills.  In 2019 he will lead three stone summits through the Stone Industry Education Series, champion an effort to update the Dimension Stone Design Manual, and serve as a volunteer on two trade delegations.

Joey Marcella (Mario & Son) has been named 2018 Natural Stone Craftsman of the Year by the Natural Stone Institute. Marcella has shared his knowledge and been a leader within the industry through years of his participation in workshops, lectures, and fabricator roundtables. Looking forward, Marcella plans to immerse himself into the international art scene, and has even been invited to intern at the renowned Massimo Galleni Studio in Pietrasanta, Italy, where he and his wife hope to establish a part-time residence.

The winners of the 2018 Pinnacle Awards were announced during the Natural Stone Institute Awards Ceremony at TISE 2019 in Las Vegas, NV. Fourteen projects were honored with Awards of Excellence, and the best overall project was selected for the Grande Pinnacle Award.

Mario & Son (Liberty Lake, Wash.) was awarded the 2018 Grande Pinnacle Award for their work on Aura. The judges commented: “Never before in my forty years in this industry have I seen anything as creative. Non-traditional choice—we have never chosen a piece of art for this award. This is the type of project that makes one ask: ‘that was done in stone?’”
