Being in the countertop industry, we all know just how important they can be. When I am out and about and see an interesting top, or a really nice install, I take note. However, the typical person encounters many of them everyday, without giving them a second thought.

That said, I ran across an interesting story in the Chicago Sun-Times that also took note of a countertop and its importance and personality, and I wanted to share it.

The article, which is a sort of a review by reporter Dave Hoekstra as part of his “Dave’s Dives” column, begins with the sentence “The Formica counter tells the story of Jeri’s Grill…” and it brought a smile to my face. The article doesn’t focus on the glitz and glamour of the place, but it does take into account the importance of the countertop in the greasy little eatery, known for its working man’s offerings and as a good place for people to get together and talk.

It struck me as I read it just how much the countertop is a centerpiece to american life, whether at a diner, a bar or just in the kitchen of a typical home, and is a place where people get together to eat, talk, cook, do homework, have a drink and any number of other common tasks that make up the minutes, hours and days of our lives. Countertops can be a stage for expressing one’s emotions and ideas, a place to lean and let go of the day’s troubles, a location for sharing traditions or just a spot to lay a weary head.

It is nice to see it celebrated outside of the industry. You can find the article here, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Maybe you will even talk about it at the countertop of your favorite little dive…
