After watching this video, I wonder if all of the solid surface tops are built from such thin solid surface in Europe? I’ve heard there were major problems with solid surface veneer (SSV) in the United States, many years ago. However,this video from the United Kingdom shows the fabrication and installation for Wilsonart Earthstone. The material used is 6mm (just a hair short of 1/4 in.) – just a little less than half of the standard thickness used in the United States. The 1/4-in. material is available from some manufacturers in the U.S., but it is generally used more for vertical applications, such as shower surrounds, etc.
The video, produced by distributor Hills Panel Products (HPP), shows the fabrication (cutting, seaming, finishing) and undermount sink installation (as well as an interesting demonstration of routing in a sink drainboard) of this solid surface product in a manner akin to laminate.
The edges are made using thermoforming (not shown in the video) and various tips and insights are offered. While the video is a bit basic for the experienced craftsman, it is more than 26 minutes long and I found myself watching it from beginning to end.
